KoSA offers a comprehensive approach to the development of the individual performer and the continuation of learned teaching skills. Although participants choose specific areas of emphasis, the curriculum is designed so that everyone is exposed to all areas of instruction.
LOCATION - The workshop will be held on the campus of Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont (near the Killington resort area). The campus is reached by interstate highways, and the closest city, Rutland, has an airport, Greyhound bus station and direct train service from New York City (Amtrak).
PROGRAM COSTS – TUITION ONLY package of $775 (US) includes all classes, master classes, informal workshops, jam sessions and evening concerts. DOUBLE OCCUPANCY package of $1330 (US) and SINGLE OCCUPANCY package of $1505 (US) comprises tuition, food (3 meals per day), jam sessions, evening concerts and lodging for the event. 1, 2, and 3-day packages are also available upon request.
REGISTRATION AND DISCOUNTS - Applications received by May 13, 2011 will get a special discount: $1325 (US) for SINGLE OCCUPANCY and $1145 (US) for DOUBLE OCCUPANCY. All applications MUST be accompanied by a non-refundable$500 (US) deposit or payment in full.
AGE REQUIRMENTS - Any participant who is 15 YEARS AND UNDER must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate in the program. The price for a 15 year and under participant and the accompanying adult will be $1750 (US) which includes tuition, food and lodging.
HOUSING - Residence halls are located close to the Casella theatre. They are equipped with pay phones and laundry facilities. Normal college regulations are in force. KoSA reserves the right to dismiss any participant who does not conform to these regulations.
SPECIAL HOTEL RATE - Folks and visitors wishing to stay at the closest hotel to the KoSA event will recieve a special rate at the Holiday Inn. Click here to recieve your special rate.
MEALS - Participants who are registered under single or double occupancy packages dine along with the KoSA faculty in the residence food hall. TUITION ONLY participants may purchase meals on an individual basis (paying per meal).
KoSA FESTIVAL CONCERTS - During KoSA, there will be many special evening concerts which will be open to the general public and will feature the instructing faculty and special guests. The concert admission charge is included for full time participants at no extra charge. On Friday evening, participants will have the chance to shine in their very own concert. Participants may play solo, with the rhythm section, or in a group setting with fellow participants. Saturday night will be the GRAND FINALE GALA CONCERT featuring the KoSA faculty. There will be a small charge to the public for all concerts ($10). Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling: 802-468-1119.
COLLEGE CREDIT - KoSA participants may obtain undergraduate or graduate credit at a cost of $220 (US) per credit if they enroll for the FULL program. Payment in full (checks made out to KoSA Communications) will be due at the on-site registration.
KoSA SPECIAL REBATE FOR MUSIC EDUCATORS - KoSA will credit the tuition portion of the KoSA program ($775 US) to any full time music educator or adult private percussion instructor enrolling a minimum of ten (10) or more students for the full week. The students' application forms and deposits must be sent along with the instructor's application in one envelope. Please contact us if you have a group. We will create a special package for you.
Program Check-In: Tuesday, July 26, 2011 between 1:00-4:00 p.m in the Casella Theatre. PLEASE BE SURE TO ARRIVE ON TIME. Dinner is at 5 pm followed by a welcome information session and ending with the KoSA opening event at 8pm and jam session.
Opening Session: Tuesday, July 26, at 8 p.m. Please note that individual classes will begin on Wednesday, July 27 at 9 a.m.
Participant concert takes place friday night. Grand finale faculty concert gala takes place Saturday evening 8pm, cost is $10 for the general public.

DRUM SET: JAZZ, LATIN, ROCK, HIP HOP AND FUNK: Every aspect of classic and contemporary application of drum kit technique and performance will be explored. Specifics are presented in hands-on classes and while playing with rhythm sections, jam sessions and in concerts.
MARCHING SNARE DRUM: Work daily on drumline techniques, repertoire, various parts and preparing for performance at the end of the camp.
NORTH AFRICAN & ARABIC STYLE FRAME DRUMMING: Learn the subtleties that create timeless styles of world hand drumming. Explore the techniques of performing on such instruments as the Egyptian Riqq, Tar Drum and the Bodhran.
POP & COMMERCIAL PERCUSSION: This track explains how percussion is used in the context of today’s music industry- both live & in studio.
CUBAN RHYTHMS AND TECHNIQUES: The rhythms and technique of Cuban music, traced from their African roots to modern concepts will be presented at all levels. Instruments covered are congas, timbales, bongos, Bata and drumset.
TRADITIONAL WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING AND DANCE: Classes on West African drumming (Ivory Coast, Guinea) along with its relationship to dance will be taught. Instruments include djembe, dun dun, and balafon (African xylophone). Participants will learn traditional rhythms, drum technique and playing in drum ensemble.
STEEL DRUM ENSEMBLE: Participants will learn performance techniques and ensemble playing in a steel band… All instruments are provided. Participants will explore the different voices and pan techniques and perform in concert.
BRAZILIAN RHYTHMS AND TECHNIQUES: This track explores the traditional hand percussion and jazz influenced rhythms of Brazil, and playing traditional “Samba” ensemble. Instruments covered include Pandeiro, Surdo, Rapanique, and more.
AFRO-COLOMBIAN DRUMMING: Explores authentic rhythms of Colombia and their performance on drumset and percussion instruments.
ELECTRONIC DRUMS, PERCUSSION & MUSIC TECHNOLOGY: An exploration of the latest electronic percussion and drums, including working with loops & sequencers as well as using the computer as an extension of the creative process. There will also be special music educator computer mini labs including classes on music notation using Sibelius software.
MUSIC TECHNOLOGY: Classes will focus on new computer based interactive learning, teaching, video conferencing and composing using software such as Garage Band.
WORLD MUSIC, RHYTHM CONCEPTS AND IMPROVISATION: An engaging study in rhythm concepts from around the world. Concepts of improvisation will be explored on various instruments and tracks.
ORCHESTRAL PERCUSSION and PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE: A total immersion in the history, theory, and performance of timpani, snare drum techniques, mallet instruments and percussion ensemble. Classes will include techniques of classical percussion instruments and ensemble repertoire.
MARIMBA PERFORMANCE & JAZZ VIBRAPHONE: A special track of marimba techniques, literature and performance will be taught as well as jazz improvisation on the vibraphone. Classes offered will include some initiation to mallet instruments as well as advanced level instruction and ensemble playing.
CAJON TECHNIQUES: Learn to master the techniques of the CAJON and its musical contexts in Peruvian, Spanish, Cuban styles as well as the CAJON in new directions in rock,pop, jazz.
RHYTHM SECTION PERFORMANCE LABS: All programs include daily performance classes with the KoSA Rhythm Section and evaluation by the instructors. This experience will also be open to instrumentalists other than percussionists.
MUSIC READING AND CHART INTERPRETATION CLASSES: Learn the essential language of music and music notation from the KoSA faculty.
SPECIAL MUSIC EDUCATOR TRACK: Percussion for band Directors: A special non-performance track has been designed for band directors and music educators wanting a total percussion experience with the top experts in the industry. Classes for this group will include classical, drumset, Latin percussion, Indian, African, Japanese, music technology labs and more.
